I have to start out saying that I haven’t been a fan of Lexmark printers and the X5470 Multifunction Printer doesn’t look like it will break that. However, a friend of mine asked me to do a little research on this printer and see if I would recommend it for their kid’s back-to-school needs. What did I discover about this low end printer?
The basic info on the Lexmark X5470 Multifunction Printer is that it is a printer, scanner, fax, and copier all rolled into one, inexpensive, package. The printer uses two ink cartridges, a black one, with a street price of about $20, and a 3 color one that’s about $2.50 more. It includes memory card slots and a PictBridge port.
How does the Lexmark X5470 Multifunction Printer do on it’s primary function, printing? The sample black text pages I saw looked fuzzy as compared to what I’ve seen from comparably priced printers or ones that were just a little more. It was adequate but not outstanding. Color printing was less than impressive with the pictures looking faded and grainy. You wouldn’t want to use this printer to print any pictures you cared much about. Print speed wasn’t all that impressive either.
When it comes to scanning, the Lexmark X5470 Multifunction Printer is in the “just OK” range. It seems up to the task but I’ve seen better performing multi-function printers in this area. It is a flatbed scanner which is nice.
As a copier, the performance of the Lexmark X5470 Multifunction Printer was poor. The copy quality wasn’t impressive and it was quite slow.
One good point about the Lexmark X5470 Multifunction Printer is that it includes built in fax capability. This is important for Windows Vista users since faxing was removed in this version of Windows. Having a printer with fax capabilities is certainly a nice-to-have if you’re stuck with Vista.
The bottom line on the Lexmark X5470 Multifunction Printer is that it is a barely passable printer with a decent scanner and fax capabilities. I would recommend the Canon Pixma series over this printer unless you absolutely had to have faxing.
